This paper analyzes the hisotrical, tranformed usage and portrayals of clowns in mass media through movies. The meaning of these figures has changed dramatically over time, from sources of entertainment to sources of horror. Specifically, this paper focuses on the infamous IT clown, also known as Pennywise, as the contemporary representation of the horrifying clown. In IT, Pennywise strikes societal and personal fears into the children of Derry. Ultimatley, the film uses clowns as vehicles to address issues involving child endangerment, bullying, sexual abuse, and racism within and beyond the town of Derry.
