The Effect of Online Dating on Contemporary Romantic Relationships

The research, still on going at this point, concerns itself with the function and role that online dating plays in contemporary times. The intent of the study is to discover how online dating affects the perception, structure, and function of romantic relationships. This research is developed through qualitative interviews and supported by texts and resources that ascribe meaning to online dating’s repercussions. I interviewed 10 subjects who have experience with online dating sites/apps. Using Uncertainty Reduction Theory and Social Penetration Theory, I code qualitative data and interpret meaning. The ongoing analysis of data will determine not whether there is an effect, but what kind of effect this new, and growing, phenomenon has on dating culture.
