Throughout time our understanding of mental illnesses and the different methods of treatment have continuously evolved and changed: hospitals and clinics are one constant facet of the experience of mental illness. One of the rarely asked questions is: what was life like on the “inside” and how did patients relate to the outside world? While it is not a very commonly discussed topic, there are persons in history who have shared their own experiences of the relation between confinement and the environment outside the institution. Their visions to help us reach a better understanding of what life was, and is, like as an inpatient.
