Throughout the twentieth century, evangelists began looking for new ways to increase their attendance and reach a larger audience. By incorporating positive thinking and self-empowerment into their sermons, evangelists such as Robert Schuller and Billy Graham were able to tap into their followers' psyches by putting more focus on the secular rather than the spiritual world. Examination of how evangelists incorporated psychological ideas into their message reveals the persistence of religion in modern psychology during its recent development.
