Everyone's Best Friend: Dogs in Psychological Research and Service

Dogs have played a dual role in psychology, both as subjects and treatment. As psychology evolved into an experimental science, dogs proved more desirable in both experiments and in treatment than cats or other species (think of Ivan Pavlov!) Alongside this, dogs, through their involvement with the military and with disabled individuals as companions and guides, have been successful in treating individuals with a number of different mental illnesses.
